Mai Thu Nguyen has written her master thesis under the supervision of Eva and Roland. She presented the results of her thesis called ´The relationship between fitness landscapes and distribution of fitness effects of new mutation.

Sarah Kadelka has joined our lab in September. She has done her PhD at Virginia Tech, where she has been working on a mathematical investigation of the immune system development and function mostly in the context of Hepatitis B infections. In the Regoes group she plans to work on the within-host dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 infections.

Eva Bons has successfully defended her PhD-thesis. The title of here thesis is 'Estimating the Evolutionary Dynamics of Viruses from Sequencing Data'.

We have had a sunny group hike around the Pfäffikersee.

Barbora Trubenova has joined our lab in July. She came from IST Austria, where she studied the adaptability of organisms in a changing environment. Specifically, she looked at the rate of adaptation, its limits, its dependence on the organism's complexity, and the frequency of environmental change.
In the Regoes group, Barbora studies the evolution of antibiotic resistance in biofilms. She hopes that her research may shed more light on this pressing problem and identify possible solutions to prevent it.

Unfortunately, Désirée Baeder has left our group again.

16-12-2019
Claudia Igler, a post-doc in our group, has received an ETH Zürich Postdoctoral Fellowship for her proposal on ‘Dynamics of phage lysis systems and their evolutionary advantages’. This enables her to work on her own project combining both experiments and theory for the next to weeks. We are very happy she will do this in our group.
Congratulations!

Enlarged view: Trip to Uetliberg

3-12-2019
The Regoes group went for a adventurous hike at the Uetliberg by night. Afterwards, Eva prepared a wonderful Indonesian dinner for all members of the group.

After a brief stint in the consultancy business, Désirée joined us again for at least three months. We are glad that you are back!

Désirée Baeder has been awarded the ETH Medal for her PhD thesis. Congratulations!

Claudia Igler has joined our lab in September. She has done her PhD at the IST Austria where she has been working on the molecular mechanisms of protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions that shape the regulation of genes in microbes. Specifically, she investigated how intrinsic biophysical characteristics of these interactions ultimately constrain the dynamics and evolution of gene regulation. She joined the Regoes group because she wants to link the knowledge of molecular mechanisms and their dynamics to evolution at the population level using experimental and theoretical tools.
