External auditors

This page refers to students from outside the ETH, and not entitled for registration as 'special students', who are interested in the modelling course. (If you are from a Swiss university, you might be entitled to register for free as a special student: check out this page.)

You can take the course if you register at the ETH as "external auditor". Information on how to do this can be found at: https://www.ethz.ch/en/studies/non-degree-courses/auditors.html.

Registration typically opens on 1 January and closes around the end of February (check the page above for the dates this year).

In the registration form, the number and title of the course is "701-1418-00" and "Modelling Course in Population and Evolutionary Biology", respectively. For Type, write "W", if you are a Masters Student, or "Dr", if you are a PhD student. Lecturer is "Viktor Müller", Number of hours is "6" (this is also the number of semester hours to be used in the calculation of the registration fee; see actual pricing at the link above. Note that this is a nominal value: the total number of hours in the 2-week block course roughly corresponds to the number of hours in a 6-hour/week normal semester course).

The total number of participants is limited to 20. Students of the ETH MSc programmes Biology and Environmental Sciences receive priority; however, priority admission ends at the beginning of February. Your registration fee as external auditor will be billed to you only if you are admitted to the course.

While the ETH does not issue official certificates of course participation or ECTS credits, if you successfully complete the course we can give you a letter certifying your completion and the ECTS value of the course and (if needed) your score. Our external auditors so far have been mostly PhD students from several countries, and this form of 'certificate' has been accepted by the PhD programmes of their home institutions.

Please, prior to registration, contact us to check whether your background is appropriate for the course (contact details on the right).
